A new copper surface can kill bacteria more than 100 times faster and more efficiently than standard copper, helping to combat the growing threat of antibiotic-resistant superbugs. "Incredibly, when we put Staphylococcus aureus on our specially designed copper surface, it destroyed more than 99.99 percent of the cells in just two minutes. So not only is it more effective, but it is 120 times faster." Importantly, Tsien says, these results were achieved without the help of any medication.
